Jem and the Holograms – Movie Discussion
If I’m honest, I kind of liked Jem. It’s not for everyone, but it did have a bit of heart and while cliché, somehow it was still touching and inspiring. The moving is about finding yourself, and being true to yourself, and to those who love you (along with themes of forgiveness and reconciliation and loss and redemption…). There are some good messages in there, but the thing that’s missing is the fact that we have a Creator and it’s HIS idea of who we are supposed to be that actually matters. We can spend a lot of time trying to decide who we want to be, but it’s futile if it’s not who God created us to be. Jem’s message about finding your identity ultimately falls short unless we point people to the reality that our identity can only be found in Christ.
For more on your identity in Christ, a quick google search, “identity in Christ, Bible verses” will get you pointed in the right direction and keep you busy for a while!
Questions for Discussion:
- What does the world (friends, media, family, etc.) tell you that your identity should be?
- Have you ever hurt people you loved in your quest to define yourself and/or to make your mark in the world?
- If you had a Creator, do you think He would know best what your identity is, or at least was meant to be?
- Do you think it would make sense to ask your Creator to help you understand what He created you to be?
