Read Shepherd Project’s discussion of Pompeii here!

Some prayed for help.  Others wished for death.  Still others imagined there were no more gods and their universe as plunged into eternal darkness.

Cassia, about him killing the horse with the broken (neck?):  It was the kindest thing to do.

Cassia:  I couldn’t believe he had the strength to do that.
Ariadne:  Then you didn’t see his muscles?
Cassia:  That’s not what I meant.

Cassia regarding Rome:  Too many arrogant men who flatter you with their presence.

Atticus:  We will have to speak at some point.
Milo:  No we won’t.  We will have to kill each other at some point, so my name is my own and I have no interest in learning yours.

Atticus:  Now who’s the poor b****** who ha to die for my freedom?

Milo:  Why did you save my life?
Atticus:  No gladiator should die from a blade to the back.  When you die it should be to the front and it will come from my hand.
Milo:  Well, I can make you a better promise:  When you die, it will be quick and it will come from my hand.

Milo:  You trust them to keep their word?
Atticus:  I trust the law.

Cassia:  Senator, you have mistaken me for the kind of woman who drapes herself across your lap in Rome.

Cassia:  You could ride before you were a gladiator?
Milo:  I could ride before I could walk.

Cassia:  If you ride, you have a chance at freedom.
Milo:  But at what cost to you?

Ariadne:  He made you feel alive?
Cassia:  He made me feel…safe.

Atticus:  It is the gods.  They have a plan for us all.
Milo:  Perhaps.  I saw the man who killed my family.  Perhaps the gods spared me for a reason.

Cassia:  Men killing each other for amusement is not a sport.

Milo:  This isn’t a battle.  This is a massacre.
Atticus:  How do you know?
Milo:  Because I was there.

Corvus:  What exactly is that slave to you?
Cassia:  Everything that you are not.

Atticus:  You are right, brother.  Everything they promised—nothing but lies.

Proculus:  You’re brave, I’ll give you that, but no savage can ever be a match for a Roman.

Cassia:  Is this the end of the world?  Why would the gods let this happen?

Atticus:  I knew the gods would never catch you.  There’s none faster, [looks at Cassia], and now I see why.

Senator Quintas:  Wait, wait, wait—who are you to do this to me?  I am Senator Quintas.
Milo:  What is that worth?  You slaughtered my people and make no mistake, my gods are coming for you.

Atticus:  For those of us about to die, we salute you.  I die a FREE MAN!

Cassia:  I don’t want to spend out last moment running.
